Recently, the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts was treated to a workshop on the Confidence Of Champions given by coaches Billy White and Peter Lee Thomas. Coach, Billy White is a protégé of the late Cus D’Amato and the current boxing coach for champion Mike Tyson. Coach Peter Lee Thomas is a personal trainer to Hollywood stars and also an alumni of the Inosanto Academy of Martial Arts.
The workshop was open to the public and drew a crowd of over 40 participants. The participants ranged in a variety of ages plus a variety of experience backgrounds. There were boxers, kickboxers, MMA fighters, and martial artist of all types in attendance.
Coach Billy and Coach Peter gave the group a good background in the history of the Cus D’Amato method as well as physical demonstrations and teaching of some of the methodology including the punching system, head movement, and foot work.
What was most heartfelt was the expression of love and admiration that Coach Billy had for his mentor Cus. Everyone in attendance could feel and understand his admiration for his mentor. This is certainly a sentiment that does not seem alien to martial artist of the caliber, who were in attendance. Also there was a documentary film crew who are currently working on a film on Cus D’Amato. The attendees were fortunate enough to see an early preview of some of the content of this film. It is magical. MALMAG will keep you updated on the development and eventual release of the film.
The majority of the people there already had some experience with punching and moving so they were able to capitalize on the nuggets of information contained in the details shown to them by Coach Billy and coach Peter. The mood was light and fun and everyone took some great bits of knowledge home with them.
